A chinchilla cage can never be too big!!! If you have a lot room for your chinchillas you can just take an entire wall unit and build a chinchilla cage with it!!! If you are building your own chinchilla cage you can be as creative as you want. If your craftmanship skills are not too good or you do not have the time to build a cage, you can also buy a chinchilla cage at the pet shop. We built this cage ourselves. We bought two cages and connected them, so the chins have more room to jump. We put wooden boards in various heights and gave them houses to sleep in. As far as we can tell, they like their cage!!! Whether you buy or build a cage you should pay attention to the following things: * Do not put the cage in a drafty area * Put the cage close to a wall. If the cage sits in the middle of the room and people always walk around it, it can make the chins nervous * If you have only one chin or a pair in the cage they only need one chinchillahouse, e.g. for sleeping. If you have a whole group in the cage, you should give them a second house to give them the chance to separate. The house should have walls on all sides, with only one hole big enough for getting in so the chins can sleep during the day without being disturbed. * Boards should be inserted in the cage in different heights to allow the chins to jump arround. You should only use wood that was not chemically treated, e.g. pine. * Chins like branches to climb around on. Branches should be taken from orchard-trees or pines. * The wood-shavings should be bought at the pet shop to make sure that no chemicals are mixed in with the wood * The feeding bowl should be very heavy to prevent the chins from throwing it around - they may end up injuring themselves * The water-bottle must be attached to the outside the cage to prevent the chins from biting holes in it * Use a bowl for the hay so that it can not fall down to the ground * The dust-bath must be filled up with special chinchilla-sand. Do not use sand for birds, etc. because this will damage the chinchillas fur * Chins like clay pipes for playing and sleeping. You can get these pipes at the do-it-yourself-store
