People often say that chinchillas are very expensive animals. That is not true and I want to show you that here:
Purchase Costs
You can buy chinchillas in hobby breeding farms starting up from 15 €, in pet shops starting from 40 € for standards
and 60 € for colours. Prices can raise up to 500 €, but normally are about 80 €.
For the right cage you have to pay about 80 €. It is much cheaper if you build up a cage on your own.
Feeding bowl, hay bowl, watter bottle, house and the other stuff for the cage costs about 50 € and then the
cage is ready for the new friend to move in.
Purchase costs are about 200 €.
Costs of Living
As the purchase costs are a little bit high the costs of living are really cheap.
Pellets are sold about 1,50 € per kilogramm. This lasts for one chinchilla about 1 month
Hay for one month costs about 2 €
Chinchilla bathing sand costs about 4 € per kilogramm. If you clean up the sand by weeding out regularly
this supply lasts very long
Specials are about 3 € per month (but you should be careful not to give your chin too much because that
is not that good for him)
Costs of Living are about 10 - 15 € per month.
Other Costs
There is always the possibility that your chinchilla gets ill and has to see the vet. The costs for a veterinary
examination depend on the vet and the illness and can start from 5 € and raise up to 100 € or more.
Summarized you can say that a chinchilla is a not too expensive pet. Please remember that a chinchilla can become
22 years old and therefore the purchase costs are not that high. And the costs of living are not to high, too.
