If you have decided to buy a chinchilla you should take care of doing two things:
You should think of what cage you would have and buy and set it up (house, dust bath, hay bowl, feeding bowl,
water bottle, etc.) before buying the chinchilla.
Then you should provide a transport box which can be also useful later, e.g. for bringing the chinchilla to
the veterinary.
And then you can go and pick up the chinchilla. For the journey home you should put the chinchilla into the
transport box and cover it with a towel so that the chinchilla is not disturbed by alle the foreign impressions.
When you and your new friend have arrived at home open the transport box and let the chinchilla go into its
new home. Let him do this alone. It can take a little time, but be patient.
After the chinchilla has jumped into the cage close the door and watch how it sounds out the situation.
The first days you should be very carefully and patient with the chinchilla. All things you have to do in
the cage, e.g. feeding, cleaning should be reduced to absolute minimum not to scare it and avoid domestication.
If your chinchilla is awake the whole day ignore it until it has recognized that during the day nothing happens
what it is interesting to it and starts sleeping by day.
After a few days you can start to offer the chinchilla goodies from out of the cage. It will take them thankful.
If it shows no fear coming to the trellis you can open the door and offer him goodies there. Most chinchillas
come there very quickly and pick up their goodies.
Then you can start to put a goodie on your hand and hold it into the cage. Normally chinchillas are very curious
and will come with its forepaws on your hand to pick up the goody.
The next step is to put the goodie on your forearm to force the chinchilla to climb there to reach the goodies.
If the chinchilla then starts to climb around on you you should open the cage door and allow the chinchilla
to sound ot the situation. It will automatically come to your hand to look for goodies. If it does so you should give
it some!!! Then you can start to touch it very carefully, e.g. if it is sitting on your hand cover it
with the other hand to make it used to the situation when catching it.
You need a lot of patience when domesticating a chinchilla but it is really worth it.
Normally it is better to buy a chinchilla at a hobby breeder, because there the little chinchillas are also used
to humans. Domestication will go much faster there then with chinchillas from commercial breedings which are not used
to humans.
